Gravity Falls

Welcome to Cartoonation. This is where I talk about all the animated shows and movies I watch and love. This is now be replacing Sugar Cube Corner which will now be a category for this.

Well, I guess it was about time I started watching this show. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube wouldn't shut up about how amazingly mind blowing Gravity Falls is. My breaking point was when the people I know even start talking about it so I decided to watch episode 1 to get a taste of the show. Now I know almost every episode back to front and quoting characters. Someone help me. :c

Gravity Falls is a unique kind of cartoon, it takes a lot of used stories you've probably seen over and over again but still manages to tell a new story with it. With mysterious journals and a town where no one could be trusted, you got a summer filled with surreal atmosphere and plot twists that some of us actually did not see coming.

The show revolves around the twins, Dipper and Mabel Pines, who are sent to stay with their great uncle Stan (AKA Grunkle Stan) in a sleepy town called Gravity Falls but one day Dipper finds a journal in the wood, in a secret compartment in the ground, because why not? That day changes their summer forever as they now have to deal with the supernatural and the ridiculous townsfolk while they solve the dark mysteries of this town.

This is the basic story of this show and I did not think much of it, mainly because I didn't know that much about it. All I knew was that this show was about Dipper and Mabel dealing with weird monsters.

Man, was that understatement of the century. Alex Hirsch really knows how to make a story insanely interesting.

The overall story was intriguing enough, the writers know how to give the viewers a good story and some answers for their handcanons while posing new questions and hinting at the bigger story with tons of continuity. Not to mention that this show is really something you wouldn't think of when you think of Disney, there are a lot of freaky imagery in this show and so many jokes and scenarios that I never thought Disney would allow, it keeps pushing the envelope with every new episode, and I like that.

The characters are great too, Dipper and Mabel are some of the best and most realistic kids characters I've seen in a show for a long time. Some of the others being Steven Universe and his friend, Connie.

Not to mention that, Dipper and Mabel are one of the very few sibling relationships that feels genuine, they act and feel like a real family and no matter how much they annoy each other, they still care about one another and would easily forgive and forget for their faults and flaws.

Dipper is the brains between the two, he's pretty resourceful and knows what mistakes to not make, giving him some foresight, not that it helps him much.

He's a kid who's fueled by sheer determination of his love for mysteries and adventures, but he is even more devoted for the ones he cares about. I mean who would sacrifice everything they've worked for just for their crazy family? We all know Dipper would.

Mabel is a girl filled with, what the fans like to call "personality". She is quite a contrast to her twin brother, while he is more introverted, awkward and sweaty, she is a complete extrovert, being quirky and loud, in a good way. This leads her to be more sociable than Dipper is, having more friends and more crushes.

She falls in love with a lot of people, even Dipper mocks her for it, calling them her crush of the week for every new one she gets.

Then there is their Grunkle Stan, he is a old con artist with little to no morale or care for human rights and decency, and the fans love them for that.

He runs the Mystery Shack, a tourist trap in the middle of the woods because a journal being found there and creepy creatures running around this place makes anymore logically sense.

Although he looks like a bad person (who has a criminal record, committed multiple tax frauds and went to jail in Colombia), he has his soft spots, the biggest one being for his family. Mabel and Dipper are people he truly cares about, he isn't afraid to put himself in danger for their sakes and would sacrifice anything for his family. He even is willing to be the bad guy, showing his nephew some tough love to toughen Dipper up so when the world fights, he fights back.

For now, I will just talk about the Pines for now to avoid spoiling newcomers so I will continue on talking about this show another time. Anyways, free free to voice your thoughts and opinions.

See you next time
